Research & Development Activities

Recent Selected Publications

The research and development activities are under the general umbrella of "systemic reform," focusing on strategies for aligning mathematics standards, curricula, and assessments.   This work is the vanguard of efforts that are necessary for translating mathematics standards into classroom practice.

The work on Mathematics Curriculum Materials Analysis has resulted in a reliable and useful procedure for development content and instructional profiles for mathematics textbooks and other instructional materials. Future research will expand the analysis to other grade levels, and examine the relationship between the profiles, how teachers use the materials, and students' learning.

The Mathematics Education program is involved in the Middle School Mathematics Project through a $5.8 million Inter-agency Educational Research Initiative grant of which $1.6 million supports our work at Texas A&M.  The project is a five-year research study on how to provide professional development and continuing support to teachers while studying the implementation of middle grades textbooks.

Earlier work on Mathematics Assessment has resulted in a current project, with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that will, over the next 3 years, develop an alignment procedure, a set of case studies, and a data base of benchmark and standards-aligned assessment tasks for K-12 science and mathematics.
