Dr. Hughes’s research focuses on the development,
assessment, and treatment of children’s social, emotional, and behavioral
disorders and on the prevention of conduct problems in youth. Author of more than 100 refereed journal
articles, she has received significant research funding from the National
Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education, and other
agencies. A Fellow of the American
Psychological Association and a licensed psychologist, she has served in
many national leadership roles including President of the American
Psychological Association Division of School Psychology. She is one of
three individuals to ever receive the APA’s Division of School Psychology’s
highest awards for outstanding contributions in both service and research
to school psychology.
Her current research focuses on understanding the nexus
between children’s social experiences at school and academic
achievement. In a number of recent
manuscripts she has examined the role of children’s relationships with
their teachers and their peers on their social, emotional, and academic
adjustment. She is also interested in how child factors, such
as behavioral style or temperament, and home factors influence school
adjustment. Dr. Hughes direct a
longitudinal study of the effects of grade retention, funded by the
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which is
currently in its 8th year.
She has also have published extensively on children’s conduct
problems and school consultation.
