Objectives

During this unit, refer to these often. Be sure that by the end of the unit you have achieved these objectives:

  1. Use basic drawing & painting tools.
  2. Distinguish between drawing and painting.
  3. Work on the same graphic with both types of tools to get what you want.
  4. Manipulate tools and use menus.

A checklist of the State Board of Educational Certification Standards addressed in this module is posted at the end of the module. Use this checklist to assess your mastery.

Draw and Paint Comparison

Draw Paint
Use for page layout, simple graphics
Illustrations, artwork
Items are layers of "objects"
Items are "images" with one layer of pixels
Objects don't erase each other; they stack Converted images, layers are lost
Vector-based images/object oriented Raster images/bitmaps/pixel-based images
Collage of mathematically defined, layered, objects Image enhancement and special effects
You alter your design object by object You alter your design pixel by pixel
Object oriented drawings are smooth
Limitations-graininess of its output, object performance

For example: The image on the left is copyright free, so I will take part of it to create a logo for a company.

I would use paint tools to select the bull and then erase the background and use draw tools to add the text.

    Assignments :

    Cohesive Series

Develop a cohesive series of still representations of an object on seven different screens connected by transitions. The series must include the following levels of abstraction-- 1) photo, 2) drawing, 3) icon or image-related graphic, 4) index or concept-related graphic, 5) symbol or arbitrary graphic, 6) definition,7) word.Consider Bertin s retinal variables when designing each screen as well as the series.

    See example 1, example 2, example3, and example 4.
